Wood Fence Styles
There is a vast array of residential wood fences to choose from. Some of the most common and popular styles are listed below.
- Spaced Board
- Vertical Board
- Split Rail
Styling ranges from sentimental white picket fences to robust privacy fences to decorative selections intended to beautify while also enhancing privacy. Many utilize custom or hybrid fencing systems, such as a mix of chain link and wood fencing or a mix of privacy and picket fencing, to meet their fencing needs. This custom hybrid system is an affordable option for those on a budget or for multi-use properties, such as those needing to define a space for gardening and another area for recreational activities. Wooden gates can be built in varying widths and with adornments to enhance your overall fence design and/or landscaping project. Fence height ranges typically from 4 to 6 feet, though it is common and easy to create higher or lower heights.
Types of Wood for your fence
The types of wood available to choose from may be equal to the abundant style options; however, the most popular options and the two that AAA Fence Company recommends are green-treated pine and Western Red Cedar.
Yellow pine is a soft wood that has a pale coloring. The green-treated variety (AC2) that AAA Fence recommends using is treated with arsenic-free chemicals to resist rot and insect infestation; therefore, it is more adept at withstanding southeastern Minnesota’s weather conditions. It is widely available and used throughout the Southeast Minnesota area. If you’re on a budget, this may be the best option. Pine wood does not have the inherent weather resistant abilities as does cedar. With the pre-applied chemical treatments and with minimal personal maintenance, you can greatly enhance these attributes and extend the life of your pine fence.
Western Red Cedar is usually considered the ideal material for wood fencing. It contains natural oils that resist rot, insects, and weather damage, making it ideal for Southeast Minnesota. All cedar wood varieties, if left untreated, will weather to a distinguished gray.
Wood fences can easily be sealed, stained, or painted and retain all finishes extremely well. The color selections are nearly endless. Customizing and personalizing your wooden fence is a simple process and can be matched to almost any existing exterior style.
Wood Fence Uses
A wooden fence has an assortment of uses including, but not limited to, an attractive home addition, ensuring privacy, containment, and/or security purposes. A wood fence can be an excellent way to provide a definitive border around your property. A wood fence is an affordable choice that can increase the worth and charm of your home.
Upkeep and Maintenance of Wood Fences
Regardless of the type of wood chosen, it is a good plan to treat your wood fencing on a regular basis to increase permanence and weather resistance. With a little effort, you can lengthen the life and maintain the beauty of your wood fence.
Maintaining your wood fence may include:
- Eliminating any type of vegetation on or near the fence. Any additional weight on your fence can lead to damage.
- Inspecting your fence every few months for damage as well as for insect nests/infestations. Ensure any repairs are made in a timely manner, as neglected repairs only worsen over time.
- Confirming your sprinkler system does not soak your fence, as this will increase the likelihood of rot.
- Brushing and/or washing any dirt and grime off of the surface, and if your fence is stained, re-apply the stain every two years.
